Inquiry Faults Liberia Force That Fired on Protesters

NYT--Liberian security forces fired with "complete disregard for human life" into crowds of civilians protesting a blanket Ebola quarantine over the summer, killing one teenager and seriously wounding another young man, according to the first independent investigation of the deadly clashes. The findings directly contradict repeated assertions by the security forces, including the American-trained Liberian Army, that soldiers fired shots only into the air to enforce the quarantine of residents, which had been imposed against the advice of international Ebola experts and the government's own health officials.

Establishment of a Community Care Center for Isolation and Management of Ebola Patients — Bomi County, Liberia, October 2014

CDC--As of October 29, 2014, a total of 6,454 Ebola virus disease (Ebola) cases had been reported in Liberia by the Liberian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, with 2,609 deaths (1). Although the national strategy for combating the ongoing Ebola epidemic calls for construction of Ebola treatment units (ETUs) in all 15 counties of Liberia, only a limited number are operational, and most of these are within Montserrado County. ETUs are intended to improve medical care delivery to persons whose illnesses meet Ebola case definitions (2), while also allowing for the safe isolation of patients to break chains of transmission in the community. Until additional ETUs are constructed, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare is supporting development of community care centers (CCCs) for isolation of patients who are awaiting Ebola diagnostic test results and for provision of basic care (e.g., oral rehydration salts solutions) to patients confirmed to have Ebola who are awaiting transfer to ETUs.

Ebola crisis: A village fights back in Sierra Leone

BBC--One community in a rural area of Sierra Leone has built its own Ebola treatment centre, the BBC's Andrew Harding reports. It is nothing much to look at - a derelict building in rural Sierra Leone surrounded by a couple of tents and a meandering maze of stick and plastic fences. But this enclosure in a village called Gbantama, about four hours drive north of the capital, Freetown, is being hailed as a missing link in the huge, chaotic and often much too slow fight against Ebola.

Sierra Leone: Sierra Leone Emergency Call Center Faces Daily Challenges

In Sierra Leone the number of Ebola cases continues to increase. The Ministry of Health and Sanitation says the country's death toll is now just over 1,000. Since August, a special emergency number, 117, has been used for people to call with any Ebola-related concerns. The call center is overwhelmed with calls daily. Grace Kargobai, who has been working at the call center since August, says that she wanted to help her country as a first responder. ?It is interesting, it is fulfilling, especially with the kind of crisis we are having now, to feel you are a Sierra Leonean and helping people, it is fulfilling for me,? she said. Calls to pick up a dead body or to check into a suspected Ebola case come here hourly. The center used to be based at the World Health Organization office in Freetown. It was moved to a bigger location so it could have more staff. The emergency number used to only exist for expect...
