HIGHLIGHTS There have been 13 703 EVD cases, with 4 920 deaths, up to the end of 27 October. All districts in Liberia and Sierra Leone are now affected. Thursday 30 October marks 30 days since the UN Mission for Ebola Emergency Response plan was implemented. Mali reported its first case on 23 October. SUMMARY A total of 13 703 confirmed, probable, and suspected cases of Ebola virus disease (EVD) have been reported in six affected countries (Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Sierra Leone, Spain, and the United States of America) and two previously affected countries (Nigeria and Senegal) up to the end of 27 October. There have been 4 922 deaths. The outbreaks of EVD in Senegal and Nigeria were declared over on 17 October and 19 October 2014, respectively.
Liberia: Encounters during the Ebola awareness campaign
Young people are taking action across West Africa to fight the Ebola outbreak. Saatah, aged 16, from Lofa County, Liberia, is among the young Plan volunteers helping affected communities to control the spread of the disease. 27 October 2014: I live in a community in Liberia not too far from the border where Ebola started. People die on a daily basis. We need help to fight Ebola but the young people can help too. I have joined a group and radio station to do awareness raising. We have been going from village to village, teaching people how to protect themselves from the virus. We have been going to speak to village leaders, and to the imams and pastors to help sensitise their people during worship services. We are given chlorine to use when doing this work.

Update: the current situation and SDC operations The number of Ebola infections continues to rise in the three countries hardest hit ? Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. The epidemic is having a grave impact on the entire health care system in the affected countries, with serious implications also for the overall security situation, food supplies and the local economies. Switzerland and other UN member states were asked by the United Nations to contribute to the "UN Mission for Ebola Emergency Response" (UNMEER). A list of in-kind requirements was provided. The SDC has reviewed the request and made contact with the Swiss Army in order to assess whether they can provide air support for the transportation of humanitarian personnel and relief items in Liberia. Moreover, the use of voluntary army personnel is under evaluation.
Summary IFRC supports National Societies with international emergency appeals to combat Ebola in Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Senegal. The appeals employ a 5 pillar approach spelled out in an Ebola regional framework, comprising: (1) Beneficiary Communication and Social Mobilization; (2) Contact Tracing and Surveillance; (3) Psychosocial Support; (4) Case Management; and (5) Safe and Dignified Burials (SDB) and Disinfection. In addition, a regional appeal was launched to accommodate multi-country support needs.
Liberia: UN Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER) External Situation Report, 28 October 2014
HIGHLIGHTS The UN Secretary-General expressed his concern at the imposition of restrictions applying to healthcare workers who have travelled to the most affected countries. UNMEER ECM’s for Guinea and Sierra Leone met with the US Ambassador to the United Nations to discuss the Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak response and underscored the criticality of concerted action to bring the crisis under control. UNMEER, in cooperation with the Logistics Cluster, air-lifted 1,050 kg of personal protective equipment (PPE) and body bags from Monrovia to Mali in response to the first confirmed case of EVD in that country. ? Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today urged countries that have imposed travel bans or closed their borders in response to the Ebola outbreak of the need to convey a sense of urgency without inciting panic, saying ?the only way to stop Ebola is to stop it at its source.? Mali Scrambles to Trace Ebola Victim's Contacts
voa--In Kayes, medical staff and national health officials are working to trace, monitor and get health facilities up and running after Mali reported its first case of Ebola last week. There are dozens of people who are in isolation at the regional hospital where the two-year-old girl was treated before dying of the virus. More cases are expected in the coming days. At around 10:00 a.m. on October 22, Abdouramane Koungoulba, the pediatrician at the Fousseyni Dao hospital in Kayes, western Mali, received a young patient who had been brought in by a relative. The two-year-old girl had a high fever and a nosebleed. The relative told him the girl was born in Kayes and that she grew up here. It was not until later that he learned she had recently come from Guinea, where she lived with her father before he died. Nor was he told that the baby and her grandmother had made the long journey from Guinea to Kayes, via the Malian capital, Bamako, on public buses.
Mali: First case of Ebola in Mali: bracing for an expansion of the outbreak
Two-year old Fanta is one of the latest victims of the Ebola epidemic which has raged West Africa. She is also the first victim in Mali, making her case not only a personal tragedy but a reminder of the risk of further expansion of the epidemic into neighbouring countries. Our Regional Information Officer to the region brings Fanta's story and its implications. Fanta, the two-year-old daughter of a Guinean father and a Malian mother died of Ebola on 24 October. 5 000 deaths into the epidemic, her passing away would most probably have gone unreported if it weren?t for the fact that she died in Mali. Fanta was the country?s first Ebola case. More than a 1 000 kilometers separate the Guinean region of Kissidougou, where the toddler and her grandmother started their journey, from the Malian city of Kayes, itself just a short distance from the Senegalese and Mauritanian borders.

The new head of Sierra Leone's Ebola response unit on Wednesday slammed lawbreakers who are undermining the fight against the deadly virus by attacking ambulances or burial teams. Retired army major Palo Conteh, head of the National Ebola Response Centre, said civil unrest and disobedience would make it impossible to beat the outbreak which has already killed almost 1,200 in the country. Highlights ? As of 26 October, the cumulative number of confirmed and probable cases of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in Sierra Leone has reached 4,199 confirmed and probable cases with a total of 1,023 deaths. ? Many confirmed and suspected cases are being turned away from overcrowded holding and/or treatment centres and unsafe burials continue to be one of the main causes of transmission. ? More health care workers, protective equipment, safe beds are urgently needed. ? Two Community Care Centres are expected to open in Port Loko this week. ? So far, 674 children have been orphaned by EVD. Schools remain closed across the country. ? Sierra Leone: NERC Coordinator lauds Hastings Ebola Treatment Centre Medical Team
The National Coordinator of the newly established National Ebola Response Centre (NERC), Rtd. Major Paolo Conteh has called for concerted efforts in the fight to contain the deadly Ebola virus disease in the country. Addressing his audience at the discharged ceremony of 41 patients who survived the deadly Ebola disease at the Hastings Ebola Treatment Centre organized at the Police Training School Keith Lewis Hall at Hastings, Rtd. Major Paolo Conteh reiterated the need for patriotism to contain the outbreak, adding that he is optimistic of victory over the disease by being together in the fight.
