Zimbabwe Elections Today: Diamonds and Disharmony

Wednesday, 31 July, 2013

Allegations from Global Witness who call upon Southern African Development Community (SADC) to investigate ZanuPF using diamonds, presumably from from the Merengi fields removed from African Consolidated Minerals some years ago, to fund election rigging.

As previously reported preferential, early voting for civil service/military ran over voting days as stipulated by the new constitution

President Mugabe declared at a live press conference he would stand down if he loses the election.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commision seems even more chaotic than usual with allegations that voting officials are deliberately implementing a “go slow” policy to prevent a large part of the electorate from actually voting

MDC-T supporters report intimidation by ZanuPF

Civil Society Monitoring Mechanism (CISOMM) report: "Confidence in the process and institutions is low. The voters roll is a shambles, security forces unreformed and the media grossly imbalanced. The electoral commission is under-funded and lacked time to prepare. Concerns about rigging are pervasive, strongly disputed results highly likely,"
