Women in Mining (WIM) have recently launched the final version of their review of women on boards in the mining industry from 2012 to 2014, entitled Mining for Talent 2015.

The report can be downloaded here.

Co-authored with PwC, the report contains the official statistics of women on boards in the mining industry, a definitive business case for women on boards, as well as helpful steps forward for increasing diversity within the mining industry.

To support the launch, WIM also hosted a discussion with the Chairmen and Senior Executives of 20 mining companies in London, including the Report’s sponsors – Anglo American plc, BHP Billiton plc, Glencore plc, Newmont Mining Corporation and Rio Tinto plc – at the Churchill Room of the House of Commons, in which its conclusions were brought to the attention of all present, with the hope of helping to progress change in the industry.

Below is a summary of the breakfast launch and the roundtable luncheon.

Mining for Talent: A review of women on boards in the mining industry report launch: 21 January 2015

WIM recently hosted a breakfast for members and the press with the support of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and PWC, to launch the third and final report on women on boards in the mining industry. Authors Amanda van Dyke, Chairman of WIM UK and Stephney Dallman of PwC provided an overview of the top ten findings in the most recent study, the business case, and steps forward to support and promote the increase of women in the industry, and women in both executive and non-executive positions on boards.

Very positive and topical discussions ensued amongst the attendees, during a Q&A session, with Amanda and Stephney providing further insights into the response from companies, and boards, and how WIM (UK) intends to continue sharing the findings within the industry. This includes a lunch in the Churchill Room at the House of Commons where the findings will be shared with mining company chairman.

Mining Industry Roundtable Lunch:  21st January 2015

Chairman representing 20 of the top 30 mining companies in London attended a lunch roundtable session at the Churchill Room in the House of Commons on 21st of January. Sir John Parker from Anglo American and Tony Haywood Chair of Glencore were among the attendees. Each of the 5 tables had a WIM Advisory Board member, a WIM Executive member, a government representative and the guests from mining companies. In total there were 40 attendees.

The lunch was hosted by WIM (UK) in order to promote the findings of the latest research into Women on Boards - Mining for Talent: A review of women on boards in the mining industry.

The diners were welcomed by Hon Robin Walker MP on behalf of the APPG International Mining which is chaired by Pauline Latham MP (who had sponsored the room) who was delayed in Prime Minister’s Questions. Amanda Van Dyke, Chair of WIM (UK), then made a brief introduction about the report and the findings. Following the main course Pauline Latham MP made a short and inspiring speech. This was followed by a led discussion chaired by Carole Cable of Brunswick in which several of the guests, including Sir John, Baroness Blackstone, Carol Sweeney of UKTI, Edward Haslam of Centamin/ Aquarius Platinum and Graham Mascall of Gemfields made interesting contributions to the discussion. Each participant took a copy of the report away with them.

Although Mining for Talent was the final report about women on boards in the mining industry, WIM (UK) intends to repeat the research and keep tracking the participation of women on boards and expects to repeat the lunch in 2016, in order to keep the focus on this important subject.

The report was kindly sponsored by Newmont Mining Corp and BHP Billiton. WIM (UK) is sponsored by Anglo American, Glencore and Rio Tinto, all of whom were represented at the lunch.
